There were so many incidents that happened in the great epic - Sri Ramayanam. And one among such incident is about the Kanaiyazhi, the ring of Sri Ramar.

He got the friendship of Guhan, who was the son of the chief of sea army. His father has been very kind enough with King Dasarathar and has done lots of help to the King. Guhan helped Righi Vishwamitrar by taking Sri Rama and Lakshmanar on the other side of the river Gangai. So, there was an indirect participation of Guhan in the vadham (killing) of the demons like Thatakai, Subagoo etc.

Once during the passage to Mithilai, Guhan blessed and congratulated Sri Ramar. On seeing the great qualities of Guhan, Sri Ramar presented him a ring (Kanaiyazhi) which had Sri Rama name in it.

Sri Ramar broke the Shiva Dhanush and married Sita Piratti. On the way back to Ayodhya, Sri Ramar along with Sita Piratti travelled in the boat of Guhan. Sita Piratti was surprised to see His Swami's Thirunaamam (name) being found on the ring that was worn by Guhan. Sri Ramar expressed His love towards Guhan and explained about their friendship.

He came to the River shore and on seeing Sri Ramar, Sita Piratti and Lakshmanar; Guhan's eye was filled with tears and heard what has happened to Sri Rama. His eyes have never seen Sri Rama in the way He has giving the Seva infront of him and could not digest what has happened for Him. To express his love and gratitude, Guhan requested all of them can stay in his place as it has become dark. Sri Ramar too accepted his request and went towards their place.

Guhan expressed that they can stay along with him on his house; but Sri Ramar said that if He accepts what Guhan says then the promise given by Him to Kaikeyi would be broken. So, in the humble tone, He says that they have to leave to the Vanam (forest). Finally, Guhan helped them to cross the river. All of them got out of the boat. On seeing Sri Ramar, a great king of Ayodhya without wearing any ornaments Guhan was very sad as tears fell from his eyes. Without having any hesitation, he removed the ring from his hand and worn t on the hand of Sri Ramar. Sri Ramar just accepted it.
