Sri Ramanujar and Melkottai:
There is a close relation between Sri Ramanujar and Thiru Narayanapuram. Sri Ramanujar stayed in this sthalam for almost 12 years and spread Sri Vaishnavism in the region.
There was a king by named "Emmadu" (Muslim King) who ruled Delhi, heard about the greatness of Melkottai and as a result of this, he marched towards Melkottai. He looted all the precious ornaments and finally he also looted Sri Selva Pillai (Utsavar) statue along with him to Delhi. Sri Ramanujar went to Delhi, and met the Sultan King. As a result of the great speech and use of great words (Sol vanmai) he attracted the king and the king ordered that he could take whatever he wants from the Gajana (the place where all the precious ornaments are grouped). But, Sri Ramanujar could not find the Idol of Selvapillai but he found the Idol in the hands of the king's daughter. With the king's permission, Sri Ramanujar took the utsavar Idol along with him and came back towards Melkottai.
But, after the Idol been taken, the king's daughter didn't eat or sleep properly. And as a result of this, the king ordered his soldiers to retain back the Idol to him. After knowing that the king has sent his soldiers to retain the Idol, Sri Ramanujar seeked the place he and the Idol reside for some time and the Harijan people helped him and they gave place for him to be safe. And finally Sri Ramanujar Installed the Utsavar once again in the temple. As a result of this, this temple was opened to the Harijans to worship the perumal and Sri Ramanujar called them as "Thiru Kulathors".
