This Sri Lakshmi is the common Lakshmi who is found in all the houses in the pooja room. This Lakshmi is found on the lotus flower and on her two sides, two elephants are found.
With this Sri Gaja Lakshmi, why elephants, are found along her side? There is a sweet story to say about this. Once, Sri Lakshmi devi and the Gajendran dedicated the flowers to Sri Vishnu as a daily practice. Both of them performed pooja by dedicating the flowers to the divine feet of Sriman Narayanan.
But, the elephant, Gajendra could not do the pooja as fast as Sri Lakshmi and as a result of this, it felt a little bit sad. On knowing about this, Sriman Narayanan asked Sri Lakshmi to come beside him and accept the flower and the pooja did by the elephant. And as said by Sri Vishnu, Sri Lakshmi came towards Sri Vishnu and accepted the pooja done by Gajendran, the elephant. And this was the story well explained in the sthalam, thiru Naavay and the perumal here reside is Sri Lakshmi Naryanan.
In various sthalams, Sri Gajalakshmi with various other names is giving the seva. Various temples like Ashtabujam, Thiru Evvul, Kooram, Uthiramerur etc, Sri Gaja Lakshmi (thaayar with elephant) are found.
